#5OnMyTBR: Friendship

#5OnMyTBR is a bookish meme hosted by E. @ Local Bee Hunter’s Nook, and occurs every Monday when we post about 5 books on our TBR.

If there’s one thing in books that is better than romance, it’s friendship.

Nowadays, it’s rare to find books with friendship as the main plot point. I know some of these stories have a romance subplot in the mix, but these are just some books on my TBR that, from that I’ve read in summaries and reviews, focus more on friendship above anything.

In no particular order (actually, that’s a lie — they’re in order of which one I’m most excited to read), here are five (5) books on my TBR that are friendship-centric.

1. The Summer of Impossibilities by Rachael Allen

Probably the one on this list I’m most excited about, this tells the story of four girls who have to spend a summer at a lake house where their moms became best friends. The summary says two of them fall in love, and honestly I am all for it. Not all of them particularly like each other, but I expect a beautiful friendship (and romance) to blossom by the end.

2. When We Were Magic by Sarah Gailey

Another one I’m really excited about mainly because I have a goal to read as many books with sapphic witches as possible. It’s about a group of friends (see: likely coven) of witches. The intro already has me sold, Keeping your magic a secret is hard. Being in love with your best friend is harder. I expect friendship, a complicated romance, and some mystery.

3. Utopia Avenue by David Mitchell

I have a penchant for band plots, so this one had me intrigued. The fictional band Utopia Avenue emerged in the psychedelic scene in 1967, and quickly disbanded at the height of their career. I’m assuming there will be an instance that reunited the band members who I also assume used to be friends during the time they were actively promoting as a band.

4. Girls Save the World in This One by Ash Parsons

This one, I know, is definitely about friendship above anything else. Three friends go to ZombieCon, and then a real zombie invasion happens during the convention. Like, can you choose two friends that you think you’d survive with during a zombie outbreak? Not a fan of zombie stories, but love girl power and friendship, so I’ll be giving this a read!

5. Six Angry Girls by Adrienne Kisner

What do I love more than a group of girl friends? A diverse group of girl friends. For real, dude. This book sounds so much fun. The main character’s life pretty much falls apart until she “finds new purpose in a pair of knitting needles and a politically active local yarn store.” They find power in a pair of knitting needles (truly), and smash the patriarchy in the process.

Honestly speaking, I’m more inclined to read a book whenever I know there’s a focus on friendship. In romance, one of my favorite tropes is friends to lovers because, personally, I can’t imagine dating anyone I can’t treat like a best friend. Plus, I found myself an amazing good group of friends, and I love seeing the same healthy relationships in books as well.

That’s it for my first #5OnMyTBR contribution. Thank you for reading!
